Forester's famous eleven-volume saga about a Royal Navy officer named Horatio Hornblower, during the Napoleonic Wars. Horatio is described on the jacket flap of my copy as "endearingly self doubting" which sums him up pretty well. Rather, he describes a process whereby Hornblower was constructed based on what attributes made a good character for the original Hornblower story, "A Happy Return" (published in America as "Beat to Quarters"). I can't talk of the other offerings, but Forester's Hornblower hardly fits that description. Factual error: When Hornblower orders "Beat to Quarters" before the second engagement with the Natividad, none of the cannons are bowsed up. A nice day, got caught up on a number of things, took a great ride, and am enjoying re-reading the Hornblower series by C.S.Forrester (I'm on Beat to Quarters, the first written but the fifth in the series). Lieutenant Bush is easily recognizable, as are all the traits and idiosyncrasies of Captain Hornblower.
